Just minutes after church was out this blustery day turned into everyone hunkering down for an hour in a hallway with no windows. The sky was green, it was pouring and blowing and hailing and lightning and scary. But after an hour the tornado warnings were lifted and folks set out for their homes. We quickly heard that the beautiful town of Washington, IL--about half an hour away--was completely devastated by one of about 80 tornadoes that touched down in Illinois today.
I had a staff meeting and Annah had youth group later in the afternoon, so we stayed. When Jeremy, Sylvia, and Caeden arrived home they saw some damage to the shakes on the northern peak of our house, and when they went inside realized the power was out. They drove to LeRoy to get some sandwiches then came back home for the afternoon.
Fortunately, because of the storm, it had been in the 70's today, so being without heat wasn't a concern. When Annah and I left church around 5:30, we stopped at Kroger for some non-refregerated snacks, water, and candles. Then we picked up some Little Caesar's pizza for supper. It was about 7pm by the time we got home, so we didn't get to enjoy much of the quiet day without power. (Being without TV or computer on football day was a little tough for Jeremy, but personally I love the quietness of this kind of day.) They did take advantage of it, actually, and were quite involved in a serious game of Disney Monopoly by candle light when Annah and I got home.
Really, we can't complain in the least about these minor inconveniences if we consider that 6 people lost their lives, and hundreds lost their homes. We are praying that God will provide protection and comfort for all of them, and will be helping however we are led.
