Chaos can be fun

As I was still running around like crazy this afternoon, trying to pack for our Thanksgiving trip to Indiana, hauling out Christmas decorations to put up when we return, and trying to find something for us to eat before getting on the road, the kids decided they could make enough space to play a crazy game of Twister in the living room!

And I decided to roll with it and let them.

Wrestling Practice

Tonight I was able to catch some of wrestling practice and take about 300+ snapshots.  The boys are just loving every minute of it--even the hard work, I think.  And, I just love watching Jeremy coach; he is so in his element.  I love to see him doing something that is his passion...He not only loves working with the kids, but he is good at it.

There are between 25-30 kids participating in this brand new program!

A little live wrestling at the end of practice keeps the boys excited about learning this sport.

I believe this is one of the big reasons we are in this community--so Jeremy can reach out to these kids and families through wrestling.  I'm so thankful God is blessing him with the opportunity!

PoC growth

The Lord continues to bring us to points of change at PoC.  We are currently working on a leadership restructuring that will help us take some great steps forward.  Today Pastor Todd announced that we have 5 official associate pastors!  What a blessing to have Pastor Jessica, Pastor Celia, Pastor Scott, Pastor Karin, and Pastor Angela in new positions.  It's gonna be good!

Pastor Scott asked me to help work with the youth band a bit.  They are some talented teens!

It is still crazy to me to see these girls in youth group!

The teens had a Turkey Bowl today...so hilarious!  They each took turns bowling a big ol' duct taped frozen turkey down the lane towards the 2-liter "pins!"

Annah found it a bit difficult.  But, she was really happy that her friend Justine came to church today with her granny and stayed all afternoon to go to youth group with her.  Such fun!!

ILMEA Junior Honor Choir

Several weeks ago, Annah auditioned for ILMEA district honor choir, band, and orchestra.  She prepared multiple pieces of music for each, and had to audition on scales, triads, and sight reading as well.  It was a lot of music to prepare, and 3 auditions in one morning, but she was accepted into both the orchestra and the choir.  Students are only allowed to participate in one ensemble though, since the rehearsals are all taking place at the same time.  She chose choir.

Today was the All-District Festival.  Rehearsals began at 8am this morning, and the concert was this afternoon at 2:30.

We sat in the balcony so we'd be sure to have a view of Annah.  She is 3rd from the left in the 2nd row up from the floor.  (wearing a white short sleeve shrug, a red dress, and white tights)

All the ensembles sounded wonderful; it was a fantastic concert!  Annah absolutely loved every bit of the experience.

I worked on each of these pieces at least a little bit with Annah when she was preparing for her audition, and I'm just so glad she had the honor of this whole experience!  Big, big thanks goes to Annah's choir director, Mr. R. for also helping her with the pieces on audition day, getting her to and from the audition, supporting her, taking her to rehearsals today, and taking her out to lunch.  He is such a great influence in her life, and we appreciate him so much!!

Love in a shoebox

Today is Operation Christmas Child day at our house.  We save items throughout the year to fill as many shoeboxes as possible.  We also made a trip to the dollar store a few days ago to get toothbrushes, toothpaste, bars of soap, and pens, pencils, and sharpeners to go in each box.  We sent 10 boxes with Dawn to go with her church's collection.  It really is a small sacrifice of time and money that turns into a huge impact in a child's life when coupled with the gospel of Jesus that's included in each box.

Yesterday, I was finishing packing boxes and hadn't found time to wrap them. I had them sitting in our music room where I teach, and one of my students, Ilya, came in and saw them.  He said, "Oh good! We are doing shoeboxes too!"  I told him that one of the reasons we have participated in Operation Christmas Child for the past several years is because someone told me that Ilya remembers receiving one of these shoeboxes!  He said, yes he did!  Ilya is old enough to remember when he  and his younger brother and sister were adopted from Russia by their wonderful parents.  I told him that knowing someone who knows what a blessing it was to receive one of these shoeboxes helps us make sure to take part in this ministry every year!

I prayed over these boxes, and know that God will bless 10 children in big ways through them!

Minor Inconveniences

Just minutes after church was out this blustery day turned into everyone hunkering down for an hour in a hallway with no windows.  The sky was green, it was pouring and blowing and hailing and lightning and scary.  But after an hour the tornado warnings were lifted and folks set out for their homes.  We quickly heard that the beautiful town of Washington, IL--about half an hour away--was completely devastated by one of about 80 tornadoes that touched down in Illinois today.

I had a staff meeting and Annah had youth group later in the afternoon, so we stayed.  When Jeremy, Sylvia, and Caeden arrived home they saw some damage to the shakes on the northern peak of our house, and when they went inside realized the power was out.  They drove to LeRoy to get some sandwiches then came back home for the afternoon.

Fortunately, because of the storm, it had been in the 70's today, so being without heat wasn't a concern.  When Annah and I left church around 5:30, we stopped at Kroger for some non-refregerated snacks, water, and candles.  Then we picked up some Little Caesar's pizza for supper.  It was about 7pm by the time we got home, so we didn't get to enjoy much of the quiet day without power.  (Being without TV or computer on football day was a little tough for Jeremy, but personally I love the quietness of this kind of day.)  They did take advantage of it, actually, and were quite involved in a serious game of Disney Monopoly by candle light when Annah and I got home.

Really, we can't complain in the least about these minor inconveniences if we consider that 6 people lost their lives, and hundreds lost their homes.  We are praying that God will provide protection and comfort for all of them, and will be helping however we are led.

Appreciating appreciation

Caeden is still loving his "new" room, and has done a good job of keeping it picked up every day for a month.  It really shows me how much he appreciates what I did and that he really likes it.

Today I poked my head in to make sure the lights were off, and I noticed how sweetly he'd made his bed with his teddy bear tucked in on the pillow, and his pj's layed out for tonight.  I love it.

School Thanksgiving

Parents of 3rd-5th graders were invited to come to school and celebrate Thanksgiving with their children at a special lunch today!  I was already at the school helping with the choirs, and loved the chance to eat with my 3rd grader and my 5th grader!

They really only get a few minutes for lunch, but I was glad to be there to share it with them.

The elementary school days (and years!) are flying by, and I'm grateful for moments like these to mark them.  I love my kids.

37

Today is my 37th birthday.  I am now official in my "late 30's"--closing in rapidly on the big 4-0.  It was a pretty low-key and relaxing day.  I stayed home all day...washed dishes, taught a few piano and voice lessons, worked on Project Life albums, crocheted a bit...it was quiet and relaxing.
I had to laugh that the kids totally forgot it was my birthday.  None of them said anything about it before school, and when they came in the door after school they were apologizing all over the place.  Nikki, who is one of my sweet piano students and also Caeden's classmate, mentioned it to Caeden at school this morning.  He told the girls when they got off the bus tonight that they'd all forgotten my birthday.  Ha!
I am in my footie jammies (which they kids gave me for my birthday a couple years ago) and off to sleep, thankful for a quiet day.

End of an Era

It's the end of an era, you might say.  Tonight, Jeremy sold his Escort ZX2.  He had it for over 15 years!  I remember seeing him drive up my parents driveway in the summer of 1998, just after he had bought it in Ohio.  He'd graduated college the December before and had been working almost 6 months.  He chose carefully, and bought the car new.

Tonight, when he handed over the title, it had 253,394 miles on it!  It was a good little car, and only Jeremy was only stuck with it dead on the side of the road with it twice.  (Once was just a couple months ago right after we bought our new Prius. It was an easy fix after it was towed.)

Even though I never drove it (It's a standard, and I just never learned.), it still has some sentimental memories attached to it for all of us.  In fact, Annah said she was sad that Jeremy sold the car, because to her it has always been "Daddy's car."

Several years ago, some of Jeremy's coworker friends teased him about how old it was and how many miles he had on it.  They dubbed it "The Sweet ZX2."  Truthfully though, because of Jeremy and discussions about this car, several of them learned the lesson of getting maximum value out of a vehicle--as opposed to leasing or constantly buying a new car any time they had an itch.

At one point, I remember Jeremy telling me it must be a "chick car" because he seemed to only see women driving other Zx2's.

I have many memories of times where I followed Jeremy home in another car. The tail lights are very distinctly shaped.  And, I often would be at the kitchen sink and see him coming down the dark road at night and would know it was his car even before he turned on the turn signal.

The kids have always thought it was a special privilege to ride in Daddy's car.  Maybe they were just glad not to have Mommy along?

As of late, Annah has really loved the privilege of riding in the front seat.

We've had some good times in the ZX2...

However, I don't have a picture of Caeden's memorable experience "Washing Daddy's Car..."

We sold the car on Craigslist, to a young man who actually lives in our own little village.

This also happened in 2003:

Commemorative photo with baby Sylvia on the day of 100,000 miles...

Perhaps it was a little painful seeing that number...?

I am pretty impressed with my husband's ability to have a car for 15 years and 253,394 miles and still have enough life left in it to sell it!

The new owner requested any maintenance records Jeremy has from over the years, and as he was going through files tonight, he found the window sticker!

Goodbye Daddy's Car!  It's been fun!
