School Days and Science Night

I continue to enjoy spending one day a week at the school.  Today was a beautiful day--even Spring-like, and I finished all the work Sylvia's and Caeden's teachers had for me early and was able to go outside with them for part of their pre-lunch recess.  It is fun to see the kids playing with their friends at school!  Usually, the kids flock around me, since I am someone who is not usually at recess, and it's so neat to hear their stories.  Sylvia and her friends were showing off for me on the jungle-gym today.

This evening, our school held some great events.  First, there was a wonderful spaghetti dinner, prepared and served by teachers and aides and parent volunteers.  Our family volunteered and got to be part of the clean-up crew.

Then, students from the science department at I.S.U. put on a Family Science Night event in the gym!  There were several very cool hands-on experiments for the kids to try.  The first one they tried was one using whole milk, food coloring, and dish soap.  It showed how the soap separates the oil--the fat in the milk.  (I had recently seen this here, and was actually planning to do this with the kids this summer.  Saves me the mess!)

There were a couple experiments involving baking soda and vinegar--fizzing and exploding, what could be more fun!?

They also got to make slime with Borax and Polyvinyl Alcohol--definitely a hit with all the kids!

Then, the highlight of the night was when the principal and teachers got to help the ISU folks make strawberry ice cream with liquid nitrogen!  The kids all got to try it, and said it was yummy.  We sure enjoyed watching them learn some cool things about science!
